“After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second you see them as they are not...three nights I sat up all night drinking absinthe...the most wonderful flowers sprang up. “Don’t you see them?” I said to the waiter. “Mais non, monsieur, il n’y a rien.”
Infamously known as the green fairy, absinthe is a licorice-like anise-flavored spirit extracted from wormwood and other botanicals. It has a high alcohol content of 90 to 148 U.S. proof and rose to popularity during La Belle Époque in France after its birth in Switzerland in the late 18th century. By 1915, absinthe was banned in the United States and most of Europe due to its possibly hallucinogenic properties. Then came its revival. Today, the green fairy flies, with adventurous drinkers from around the world under her spell.
Smalls, a whimsical bar in Soi Suan Phlu, is the best place to try absinthe in Bangkok. Enter through the mysterious revolving door and be transported back in time. Admire the artwork on the ceilings and the walls, as you wait for your order to be taken. Now get up and head over to the bar—don’t forget your cameras!
The drink preparation itself is a mesmerizing show, but with Smalls’ unique retro interior and beautiful Wednesday Jazz, drinking absinthe becomes an artistic experience. Watch as the absinthe-soaked sugar cube atop the slotted spoon is set on fire, caramelized sugar melting into your drink below. Tip the spoon and enjoy the flicker of greenish flames dancing in your glass before extinguishing the fire with a shot of cold water. Now a milky color, your drink is ready to add dance to your moves and song to your tunes.
Consistently ranked on Asia’s 50 Best Bars, Smalls will blow you away every single time you visit due to its excellent burgers, ever changing Thursday food pop-ups as well as Wednesday live music concerts from local and international musicians. Every Friday night, DJ Fredrick Funk takes over Smalls with trumpet player Sarit Tanpensuk. On Saturdays, the venue welcomes DJ Justin Mills and on Sunday, DJ Funky Pump from Apartment Khunpa. Like Smalls’ Facebook Page to stay updated on their pop-ups, live performances, and other events. A little birdie told me that Daniel Thaiger Burger is visiting Smalls’ kitchen this July 17th! Keep checking BangkokHaps.com for event details ;)
Finally, we are pleased to announce that all BangkokHaps users will receive a (discount) at Smalls. To claim this special offer, show the promo photo below to Smalls staff.
