The WoodShed (BTS Phrom Phong)

Head down Sukhumvit Soi 31 to HARVEST Restaurant and walk on through the restaurant, into this magical little box called the WoodShed. I must immediately highlight that the acoustic quality there is one of the best around town for live Jazz! To musicians, a “woodshed” is that mystical place from a time before recording studios, a place where a musician locks himself into to practice his instrument. It represents the hundreds of hours a musician dedicates to his music, often without appreciation or applause.

This woodshed in Bangkok’s busy Phrom Phong is a Jazz club, a real one, where you will probably meet the owners, siblings Tim and Belle. Expect several variations of live Jazz every day—something exceptional for the Bangkok Jazz scene—with New Orleans Jazz every Monday and Wednesday and Straight Ahead Jazz on the other days. Earlier, I mentioned the HARVEST Restaurant, and it would not be right for me to leave it at that. Stepping into HARVEST is like entering someone’s home, where you can just relax and enjoy some delicious home-cooked food. HARVEST takes pride in cooking from scratch as much as possible, using only natural ingredients, resulting in dishes that are aromatically alluring, wholesomely packed with nutrients, rich in flavors, and are visually striking.

The Living Room (BTS Asoke)

Around the Sukhumvit area, precisely by the Asoke BTS Station with direct access to keep you dry and away from traffic jams, the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit houses one reknowned Jazz Bar. Named “The Living Room” this bar has established itself as one of Bangkok's premier live jazz venues. Its interiors are spacious and offer the ultimate comfort, not unlike what you would expect from a “living room” of a 5-star hotel.

The line-up of musicians features outstanding performers, both international talent and most respected local musicians. I want to give a shout-out to the late Randy Cannon, who had been holding down the piano here for years, and guess why... Well, because he was damn good. In the middle of the 19th century, when Thailand was still known as Siam, a rest house for foreign seafarers was established on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. It was to become one of the world’s greatest hotels: The Mandarin Oriental... And that is where the Bamboo Bar sits.

FooJohn Building is a unique music venue and restaurant where 3 offerings, 3 interiors, and 3 atmospheres coexist in a renovated 1960's post-modern building. Walk into the 1st-floor bistro, FoudieJoie, an authentic French bistro that serves crepes, wine and charcuterie.

FooJohn Building is great for hanging out with friends as well as meeting fellow live music lovers and Jazz aficionados. But even if you come alone (and prefer to be alone), it is intimate and you are never very far away from the musicians so you may you feel as though you are part of the band.

FooJohn showcases a variety of musicians ranging via Jam Sessions as well as solo performances. They have welcomed some well known international and local musicians such as Mitch Frohman, Jakob Dinesen, Jean-Seb Simonoviez, Teerapoj Bump Plitakul, and Joshua Lebofsky to name a few. And one musician who is part of all of the Jazz sessions, is no one other than Mr. Sticks, our favorite French drummer who with his distinctive playing style brings that French je ne sais quoi feeling to the set.

Recently, Soul Bar has taken over the 3rd floor with some pop-up events. What a great idea to combine both venues in one building, as it only makes us more inclined to visit the place for some live music sets. Make sure you stop by the FooJohn Building to check it all out.

Whisgars is a unique whiskey and cigar specialty bar with a nod to the luxurious classic gentlemen's club. The focus is on rare single cask, high-end single malt whiskey, premium hand-rolled cigars, and expertly-mixed cocktails. Let me highlight that the selection of cigars has increased as Whisgars currently offers a very varied menu of Cuban, Dominican, and Nicaraguan cigars. There could be some Costa Rican cigars there as well depending on the latest shipments arrival.

Expect near-royal treatment at this venue, because as a regular, I’ve observed that there is a strong focus on service with a team of knowledgeable barmen and waitresses to assist you with the extensive selection of offerings.

As it is conveniently located in the rear of CRAFT, the famous beer venue, you may also grab a pint of stout or other beers before you enter the world of whiskey and cigars. jazZ happens (Phra-Nakorn)

jazZ happens is a jazz commune offering a stage for aspiring jazzists to showcase their talent. It is a tiny (capacity of only 25-30 people) musical haven where ideas and artistic visions are shared, but more than anything, it is a celebration of jazz and generally a cool place to chill out and absorb the music and Thai culture. If you’re wondering about the last part, let me explain that this bar is smack in the middle of Old Bangkok, near the Grand Palace and some of Bangkok’s most famous temples. Moreover, their drinks menu includes only local and Lao beer—no imports—whiskey, wines, and cocktails. As you can probably guess, the food served here is Thai, with the highlights being deep-fried pork in fish sauce, spicy salmon salad, salted beef fried rice, som tam (papaya salad), and raw shrimp in spicy fish sauce.

Saxophone Pub & Restaurant is known to be one of the best Jazz & Blues music venues in Bangkok, guaranteed by the line-ups of famous Thai artists such as Koh Mr. Saxman, T-Bone Band, Neung Jakkawal Band, The Emergency, JRP Little Band, and lots more. The Melting Clock (BTS Ekamai)

As you walk in, you are immediately struck by the ambiance and decor that rivals an art gallery. The live music is nightly with some jazz but you can also listen to a varied selection of genres but all excellent quality performances by local as well as international musicians. We’ve enjoyed the fabulous Fabão playing and singing bossa nova and samba, Lips Manly, and Smooth Boss here at the Melting Clock. The O-Square with Yanisa and Gregory Wilson are regulars throughout the week, which makes The Melting Clock an excellent choice for a musical evening out with friends.

The sound system provides a great blend of music and conversation with friends. The venue itself is rather roomy and airy, which allows you to move to the rear of the room should you wish to entertain a larger group of noisy friends. The kitchen is open till late at night, and from the menu, you will find authentic Italian dishes, creative fusion appetizers, and an extensive list of wine and other alcohol. A real find amongst nightlife spots in BKK.

Alonetogether (BTS Phrom Phong)

Alonetogether is the new and snazzy Jazz Boy on the block of Jazz Bars in Bangkok! Lucky for me, it is only about 300 meters from where I live, so as soon as I heard about it, I ran over to check it out. The funny thing is that I could not find it until the next day, stumbling upon it by fortunate coincidence. When I found it full of friendly faces, all Jazz aficionados, I knew that I was on to something. The name Alonetogether seems to perfectly fit the atmosphere from the moment you walk in and squeeze yourself down this narrow corridor which is the bar, that then opens up to a venue in which resides a grand piano and drum set. A true harmony between the public, the musicians, and the mixologist. Apparently, after 11 PM, there is a jam session, where the public becomes the show, and as long as the quality of the jam session maintains a certain level, I am all for it.

Alonetogether น้องใหม่มาแรงในแวดวงบาร์แจ๊สแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร อยู่เพี่ยง 300 เมตรจากที่พักของผม แต่สิ่งที่ตลกที่สุดคือคืนแรกที่อยากจะแวะไป ผมหาเท่าไหร่ก็หาไม่เจอ จนเช้าสว่างแล้วก็มืดลงอีกครั้ง ผมถึงได้เจอทางเข้าร้านโดยบังเอิญ ซึ่งเป็นโชคดีของผม เพราะแค่ก้าวแรกที่เข้าไปยังตัวร้าน ก็เจอคนรู้จักมากมาย มีแต่คนที่ชื่นชอบดนตรีแจ๊สเหมือนผม ชื่อของร้านที่แปลว่าอยู่คนเดียวหรืออยู่อย่างสันโดษด้วยกันนั้นเข้ากับบรรยากาศภายในร้านอย่างเหลือเชื่อ ด้วยทางเดินเล็กๆ ที่ขนานกับบาร์ ที่จะพาคุณตรงไปยังห้องที่มีแกรนด์เปียโนและกลองชุด บรรยากาศทำให้คนดู นักดนตรี และผู้สร้างสรรค์เครื่องดื่มอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ ที่ร้านจะมีดนตรีสดแบบ Jam Session หลังห้าทุ่ม ซึ่งเป็นการแสดงดนตรีที่เปิดโอกาสให้นักดนตรีในหมู่ผู้ชมมามีส่วนร่วมบรรเลงเพลงไปดัวยกันอย่างไม่ได้ซ้อมหรือนัดกันมาก่อน ซึ่ง Jam Session นั้นเป็นประเภทโชว์ที่ผมชอบฟังมาก

While sipping on a very generous gin & tonic and chatting with the barman, he let slip that the upstairs will soon become a cigar bar. I am not an OMG type of guy, but OMG does apply to me when the subject is about adding cigars to anything. Let’s go now. As far as the line up of musicians, I am pleased to report that there are some top notch dudes coming around, I could throw out a few names like Pong, Denny, Tae, Shawn, Sarit, Pisut, and Hong... but I won’t. Well, too late. So in all honesty, go give it a go, squeeze in and enjoy.

คืนนั้น ระหว่างที่ผมดื่ม Gin & Tonic แก้วโต และพูดคุยเรื่อยเปื่อยกับบาร์แมน ผมก็ไดรู้ความลับของทางร้าน ว่าตอนนี้กำลังปรับจัดโซนบริเวณด้านบนให้เป็นบาร์ซิการ์ ปกติแล้วผมไม่ใช่คนที่ร้องว๊าวหรือตื่นเต้นกับอะไรเท่าไหร่ แต่เมื่อเป็นอะไรที่เกี่ยวกับซิการ์แล้วล่ะก็ อย่าว่ากันเลยแล้วกัน แล้วถ้าพูดถึงนักดนตรีที่มาแสดงในบาร์ลึกลับแห่งนี้ ก็มีแต่ชื่อที่คอแจ๊สในกรุงเทพจะต้องรู้จัก ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Pong, Denny, Tae, Shawn, Sarit, Pisut, หรือ Hong. เป็นยังไงกันบ้างครับ เชื่อแล้วหรือยังว่าบาร์นี้ ต้องลอง!
